With the Italian Market out of the way, we can now concentrate on the September Food and Drink Festival. Our offer is for anyone with surplus vegetables to come and join us on Thursday, 16th September from 9 until 2 and sell or swap what they have. Everyone is welcome. If you have something grown on a farm, allotment, garden or window box and would like to exchange it or sell it, then please come along. It won't cost you anything.
OCTOBER
Spring brings us the welcome blossom on the trees which turn to a myriad of green leaves for the Summer and then line our lanes with their golden colours for Autumn. Harvest should be almost complete and the culinary skills of traditionalists brought to the fore for preserving, by every means, foods for the Winter months. Whilst it isn’t necessary for us to do this any more, there is nothing more satisfying than knowing that most of the mid Winter feast (trying not mention the C word here) has been produced locally, or from your own garden.
It is the time; to make the traditional puddings and cakes which are fed brandy to keep them moist, ready for a Winter feast; to smoke the hams and fish and to make the chutneys and pickles to serve with them. Many of these items are flavoured with dried herbs and spices, a large selection, of which, we have in the shop.
Many small companies have developed in Sussex, producing some fantastic products including chutneys, pickles, relishes, smoked meats and fish, cakes, puddings, honey, oils, quail eggs, hens eggs, duck eggs, pasta, butter and, in particular cheeses. We try to stock as many as we can in the shop and are often asked to produce a “Sussex” Hamper. We have delicious bottles of Apple Juice, as well as local beers, wines, even sparkling pinks and whites (again, can’t mention the other C word).
We still have some fresh vegetables, including lettuces, growing on the farm, and from other local growers This includes a large selection of pumpkins and squashes, both culinary and for carving for Halloween. Come in and pick up our recipe leaflet for Pumpkin Pie, or browse through the recipe books whilst relaxing with a hot chocolate in our tea room.

Having often been asked if we do ORGANIC MILK I can now let you all know that I have found a supplier. The Goodwood Estate Company Ltd can supply milk with the Soil Association symbol on it. They do cream 250mls, Whole Milk, Semi Skimmed milk and skimmed milk in 1 Litre or 2 Litre bottles. Let me know if you are interested and I will order it in especially for you. They are hoping to be making butter and cheese shortly. If you want to see what "Jamie at Home" is all about, come to Burdfields Country Market on Friday, 23rd April, St. George's Day, from 10am until 12.00 noon and see for yourself all the lovely products and gadgets you can buy for your Kitchen and Garden. A reminder of our Herbs and Spices, and the Whole foods selection. I am amazed that nearly every customer, particularly at the weekends, buys at least one packet of something we’ve packed ourselves and although they don’t cost very much, I get quite a buzz from it, because the packaging is our own corporate identity and can’t be bought anywhere else……. Yet! Also, the Polytunnel has been cleared and, hopefully, if Peter gets time, will have seeds planted next week. I have asked for as many herbs as possible. This is because we have started selling a good selection of fresh herbs, but we have to buy them from the market: Tarragon, Mint, Sage, Chives, Flat Parsley, Curley Parsley and loads of Coriander, as well as fresh Rosemary and fresh Bay.
